NOTIFICATION – TREE WORK ON WALNUT AVENUE

Mare Island Co. regularly surveys many different facets of our island including buildings, parking lots, lawns, and streets.

Recently, we worked with an arborist to check into the health of two Canary Palm trees near 995 & 1015 Walnut Avenue. Unfortunately, the arborist determined that these palms were badly diseased, suffering from a level of fugus and pests beyond that which could be treated; their findings were confirmed by another arborist who we brought in for a second opinion. In order to protect Mare Island trees and plant life, we’ve directed that these two trees be carefully removed from the Island. The arborist report is attached for reference.

NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP WORK BUILDING 84/84A – FLAGSHIP DRIVE BEGINNING JUNE 2023

Mare Island Businesses and Homeowners:

Beginning in late June 2023, Lennar Mare Island (LMI) and its environmental contractors will conduct environmental cleanup/remediation work on the interior of Building 84/84A (see attached location map). The project is being performed under the regulatory oversight of the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The project will clean up building materials and, if needed, exposed soil from the interior of Building 84/84A that contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at concentrations that exceed the unrestricted (residential) cleanup level applicable to this project. Following remediation, samples of remediated building surfaces, exposed interior soil, and indoor air will be collected. If unrestricted cleanup levels cannot be achieved without impacting the structural integrity of the building, then alternatives will be considered, including potential future use of the building for commercial purposes, if commercial cleanup levels have been achieved. During fieldwork, air monitoring will be conducted to confirm that there is no exposure of potentially hazardous particulates to site workers and the public.

Work in Building 84/84A will be done with care to preserve the historic and architectural value of this building which is designated as a Notable Resource by the City of Vallejo. Therefore, evaluating and maintaining the structural integrity of the building will be an ongoing part of the project.

Construction traffic will be primarily routed through commercial areas, as shown on the approved traffic control plan (attached). No road closures are expected. It is estimated that the remediation activities will be completed within 4 to 6 months, depending on weather and any unforeseen circumstances. Should the schedule change, we will issue an amended notification.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Laura Morgan with LMI at 415-760- 0690 or Greg Roussos with Weston Solutions at 513-604-4797. Weston Solutions is LMI’s contractor who will be performing the environmental work.
