Winged Migration Expo soars into Mare Island

Two-day event for bird and wildlife enthusiasts continues on Sunday with more than 70 vendors, 10 hike locations

There wasn’t much Red Bull to be found, but make no mistake, Mare Island was the place for everyone to get their wings this weekend. The area at Building 69 became the central hub for the Winged Migration Expo, a two-day event once again featuring exhibits that strike a chord not only with bird and wildlife enthusiasts but also those looking to make a difference themselves, whether it be with a career or as a hobby.

“It’s been great, and it’s even bigger than last year,” said Rachelle Canones, a Community Outreach Specialist with Vallejo Flood and Wastewater District. “Last year we had about 45 vendors, while this year we have 72. There are a lot more hikes this year, and we also have the National Park Service giving tours for the historic sailing ship, the C.A. Thayer. We had 400 people sign up for that right away, and it’s sold out. So we’re very happy.”
