Safety Notice: Mare Island Causeway Bridge Pedestrian & Bicycle Closure Begins Today (10.5.26)
Safety Notice: Mare Island Causeway Bridge Pedestrian & Bicycle Closure Begins Today (October 5)
The City of Vallejo is committed to keeping our community informed and safe. Please be advised that the Mare Island Causeway Bridge will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists from October 5 - October 23, 2026 due to essential work taking place on the bridge deck.
During this period, crews will be applying polyester concrete and methacrylate materials—high‑performance products that are crucial for strengthening and extending the life of the bridge. While this work is important, the materials used are classified as carcinogenic and contain chemicals that may pose health risks to individuals in close proximity. These substances produce a strong, sharp odor when applied, which can lead to headaches, nausea, and irritation of the eyes, skin, or respiratory system.
To protect the wellbeing of our residents and visitors, all pedestrian and bicycle access on the bridge, as well as all trails located underneath it, will be temporarily closed during the operation. This closure is a proactive measure to prevent exposure and ensure the safety of everyone in our community.
Please note that vehicular traffic will continue to be permitted, and drivers should expect to use the bridge as normal throughout the project timeline. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding as we complete this important infrastructure improvement. The City remains dedicated to maintaining safe, reliable transportation routes for all.
