Runners take over Mare Island during the weekend
Over a decade ago, former Cunningham Pool lifeguards Andrew Bozanich and Justin Saroyan dreamed of one day hosting a marathon in Vallejo. Judging by the 1,000 participants on Sunday at Mare Island, that dream once again became a reality.
The Mare Island Half Marathon 10k and 5K races took place for the 12th time, starting in 2012 and only taking the years 2020 and 2021 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This started as a triathalon and over time evolved so much,” Saroyan told the Times-Herald on Monday. “It helps two non profits — the More than a Cut Foundation and Humane Society of North Bay. The run helps More than a Cut (a barber school) give out scholarships, while it also helps the Ruff Runners, help with the adoption process. In fact, some dogs ran the race on Sunday and later were adopted.”
